Backpackers Travel Guide - 8 Best Backpacking Tips

Backpackers Travel Guide

Going low is what every traveller wants, I mean spending little money on holiday  and still get the most of it. To do this, you don’t want premium accommodation or well-furnished hotels. All what you want is tented camps or pitching your own tent. You don’t need full board accommodation. In short backpacking travel is all about going cheap, I mean the cheapest way to travel.

Here is the complete guide on backpacking:

1.      Choose Right Destination:

When doing backpacking travel, choose the destination which is backpacking friendly. Some destinations don’t favour backpackers, choosing a destination which is accessible through public means is important to you as a backpack traveller. Things to consider while choosing destination are;

a.      Safety of destination

b.      Availability of camping sites

c.      Budget friendly

d.      Easy Visa processing requirements and cost

e.      Availability of Activities of your interest

f.        Weather of the destination at the proposed backpacking travel time.

2.      Itinerary Planning:

Plan rough itinerary by avoiding scheduling every hour, instead pick specific cities or national parks to visit and be sure the number of days you would want to spend.

Example Itinerary:

Day 1: Visit Kruger national park

Day 2: Game drive in Kruger national park

Day 3: Visit Cape town, etc.

3.      Accommodation:

Don’t stay in luxury safari lodges, instead choose to stay in hostels, guest houses, comping sites that range $20 to $30 per night.

4.      Where to eat:

While in backpacking safari in Uganda, avoid English restaurants that cook first food, opt for street food, eat in local market restaurants, or cook your own food in hostel where you stay.

5.      Transportation:

Avoid hiring safari vehicles, instead opt for public transport such as buses, public taxis or boda boda.

6.      Pack light:

While doing backpacking travel, do not carry heavy luggage with you, carry something light for you to move with, and forget get toiletries, first aid kit, power bank, light clothes such as towel that dries quickly, clothes, walking boots, mosquito repellent, rain jacket, hand gloves etc.

7.       Avoid expensive activities:

As we said from the beginning, backpacking is all about going cheap on your trip, so to maintain this, you need to avoid visiting expensive places, such as expensive museums, doing activities such as gorilla trekking.

8.      Currency:

Depending on the country where you are backpacking from, its advisable to carry mixed currency that’s to say USD with local currency if you are from USA, euro with local currency  if you are from Europe, pound sterling with local currency if you are from United Kingdom.
